Ellie Kavalieros DIPG Research Fund

Established in 2010 in honor of Ellie Kavalieros, the Ellie Kavalieros DIPG Research Fund provides critical support for innovative research for Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). Ellie was diagnosed with DIPG in May 2010; she peacefully passed away Christmas morning 2011 at the age of eleven. DIPG is an inoperable, high-grade brain tumor. It grows in the middle of the brain stem, entrenching itself beyond the reach of conventional treatments, taking the child’s vision, hearing and motor functions but never their awareness of what is happening to them. Most children diagnosed with this form of brain cancer will lose their battle with this disease within 9-12 months.

Gabriel House of Care

​

Gabriel House of Care is an affordable extended-stay hospital hospitality house for cancer and organ transplant patients receiving medical care away from home and their caregivers. It offers comfort and peace of mind to families requiring local accommodations while receiving specialized medical care in our community. Everyday in the United States, thousands of people wait for life saving organ and bone marrow transplants and thousands more seek treatments for cancer-related illnesses. Far from home for weeks, or months, the emotional and financial burden for patients undergoing cancer treatment can be overwhelming. Guests at the Gabriel House will never face these burdens alone. Our staff, volunteers, and other patients and caregivers are there to provide friendship, compassion and support during these difficult times. In April of 2011, Gabriel House of Care opened its doors and has had over 1,200 guests visits, from over 35 states and 2 countries. The average length of stay at the Gabriel House is 13 days. Patients can stay anywhere from a few days to 6 months or more for organ transplantation, recovery and rehabilitation. Services provided by Gabriel House are supported through the generosity of individuals, corporations, foundations and special events, like Serving Up a Cure.

Community Hospice and Palliative Care

Established in 1979, Community Hospice & Palliative Care is an innovative national leader in palliative and hospice care, as well as providing programs and services to meet the diverse needs of the communities it serves. During its 38-year history, Community Hospice & Palliative Care has served nearly 200,000 adults and children in Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties, and recently expanded its service area to include 11 counties in north-central Florida. Through the support of more than 950 employees and 1,000 volunteers, the organization helps approximately 1,500 patients per day to live better with advanced illness – at home, in long-term care and assisted living facilities, in hospitals and at its eight inpatient care centers. The organization is committed to improving the quality of life for patients and their families and to be the compassionate guide for end-of-life care in our communities. No one is ever denied care due to an inability to pay.
